love & obsession

"Obsession is a young man's game, and my only excuse is that I never grew old."
Michael Caine

elizabeth barrett wrote
many portuguese sonnets
shah jahan built taj mahal
with four minarets
she, to proclaim immortal love
for a departed husband
he, to honor his beloved wife
throughout all the land

the poets of old have called
that love and devotion
but in today’s world,
it has been labeled obsession
what happened to tales
of passion and romance?
in this age of hip-hop,
syndromes and transplants

is it obsession to think of her
every waking moment?
when any day without her
such intolerable torment
is it compulsion to regard
her welfare above one’s own?
when she’s the cure to a life
of grief and painful isolation?

how do you draw the line
between healthy emotion
and mad obsession;
passionate love and compulsion?
when does intense feeling
for someone go beyond sanity?
when does affection stop
being part of one’s humanity?

it’s a constant struggle
but there is no clear answer
there is no black nor white
and only shades that matter
love if unrequited can lead
to much pain and anguish
obsession thrives,
compulsion grows; love will perish

I wrote this poem over ten years ago. Today I resurrected it from purgatory to see the light of day. Changed the format and modified some phrases. Now I'm happy
