dandelion

“Dandelions are just friendly little weeds
who only want to be loved like flowers.”
Heather Babcock

right after yesterday’s refreshing rain
fragile nascent life in hostile terrain

in crevasses in the asphalt pavement
weeds sprout like viridescent ornament

toughness and fortitude we all cherish
resilient, they persevere and flourish

soaking the sun’s rays refusing to die
tiny green leaves reaching out to the sky

its tangled roots cling to the barren soil
the sun hot enough to make water boil

seeking solace in the chill of the night
the evening dew alleviates its plight

the weeds refreshed thoroughly by morning
small green flower buds are now appearing

the tiny buds have blossomed by mid-day
golden yellow flowers, a striking display

bright vivid blooms evoking early spring
despite bleak bare unfriendly surrounding

which begs the question why is it a weed?
quite an aesthetic, quite lovely indeed

each blossom actually a flower head
with the florets arranged in a round bed

the flower heads, disks facing heavenward
like miniature suns in a cosmic yard

the sole attraction in the stark landscape
from the grimness a marvellous escape

splash of color in the asphalt surface
to the dire world excitement and solace

and weed though it be, no disgrace nor shame
lord of the weeds, dandelion its name

“I was a dandelion puff...Some saw the beauty in me and stooped quietly to admire my innocence. Others saw the potential of what I could do for them, so they uprooted me, seeking to shape me around their needs. They blew at my head, scattering my hair from the roots, changing me to suit them. Yet still others saw me as something that was unworthy and needed to be erased.”

I have been an dandelion executioner in my youth. I shouldn't have been.
