First week of July, and the hot blazing sun
Envelopes the land, scorching all on sight;
The heat smothers, suffocating everyone;
And breathless, we dream of fall every night
The autumn’s cool breeze, when summer’s gone
Invigorates, for the heat takes flight!
And the doldrums that permeate the strand
Finally blown away by nature’s unseen hand…
Fall brings cool sensations, a nip in the air
Soon we’ll forget the hot mind-numbing spell
The harvest moon rises to answer our prayer
As dog days of summer bid a hesitant farewell;
Nature’s cornucopia, in the country fair
On display; in every town where we dwell;
Haystacks dot the fields; grain fills the stores,
Our cup of blessings overflows and it pours!
Autumn! Beautiful season when leaves blossom
From rich green, they turn buttery yellow,
Amber orange, burgundy red; scarlet and crimson,
Purple and magenta; colors of the rainbow…
The leaves bloom, as if spring begets autumn
And forests become nature’s magnificent show!
Brilliant displays of every shade and hue;
Spectacular sights for every human eye to view!
Sadly, autumn’s earthly mandate’s not forever
Eventually the leaves of many colors will fall,
And a plum-colored carpet will be ground cover,
As bone-chilling winds answer winter’s call!
Soon, the world will spurn its youthful lover
But nature’s Godsend already in store for us all!
Autumn has prepared us for winter’s cold
With providence and blessings a hundredfold!

“Autumn is a second spring when every
leaf is a flower.” ~ Albert Camus
“To be interested in the changing seasons
is a happier state of mind than to be hopelessly
in love with spring” ~ George Santayana

9yNature poems are so fun. So many possible metaphors and life analogies. Beautiful!

9yBeautiful poem, reminds me of one I wrote called. The Beauty Of October. For me as soon as fall comes I instantly feel better physically. I'll be very glad when summers over. There are things to enjoy about the summer though, and I thank God for it.

9yYes Charlotte, I've read your poem. I just love autumn, the cooler weather, the feeling of God's bounty that comes with the harvest, the kaleidoscope of earthy colors... Thanks for liking

9yTrue, the Sun, the life giver, the pigment source of the planet earth's seasonal canvas of spectacular color wheel gives us a second spring color but I must say in a subdued way like whispering to us that something is coming our way once the trees begin to bare, preparing us like you said for a drastic change. Santayana's "...hopelessly in love with spring..." begs an eye roll of sort. One can not help but be "hopelessly in love with spring" after winter, especially after a long and or a brutal winter having wreaked havoc and death in some parts of nature. And then comes spring that literally "springs" our spirit up through the early winter wonderful time. Camus is right on, we have two springs to be hopelessly in love with sandwiching a youthful beach season at that. That indeed is a cornucopia of seasons we're lucky the Sun is providing us. The poem is framed beautifully. One more for the ages. Loved it. And yes, the dying leaf has seen another Sun!
