A Solitary Walk

“Much of the marble coldness of Hester’s impression was to be attributed to the circumstance that her life had turned, in a great measure, from passion and feeling, to thought.”
~Nathaniel Hawthorne, ‘The Scarlet Letter’

A Sonnet to Hester Prynne

Her life’s a solitary walk in the woods
Her days spent in silence, in solitude
No human contacts to alter her moods
And only her own heartbeats to intrude

On her own, she suffers not loneliness
Even though alone, she fears no danger
But rather, she feels contentment and peace
No strife, no resentment and no anger

But alone, she feels no love, no friendship
No arms around to give a warm embrace
No ears to listen, none to share thoughts with
No sorrows, yes! Sadly, no happy days!
For such is the price of isolation
Peace and calm. Not an ounce of affection!
