gooseberry jello

sit down my dears
and I will tell
a story wondrous—true.

of life and love
and all the things
that color grey skies blue.

a woman dressed in her own might
a sailor home for good.
A divorcee not up for fight
a farmer’s son’s upt mood.

at college late they then once met
a chance i know not how
our dear Lord did so break the fence
of years and loves lost sown

a finer couple never was
than Jon and Carolyn
until the Lord doth come again
and never be again

he fixes up the house for her
wallpapers, cleans, and mows
he makes her laugh
and makes her smirk
her smile all he knows.

She gave him four dear children
the quiet joys of his life
though they forget and leave him an–
sow discord toil and strife
they yet still love them
servicing
their smallest woes, requests
a lifetime’s love in chocolate
or sewn quick in a dress.

for her words art a puzzle piece
a tangled web of threads
she expertly untangles then
then expert weaves and wefts

for him she does a simple thing
each year post harvest hence
Thanksgiving comes, she makes him king
through simple profferance

a gelatin concoction, flourescent in its glow
the carrot’s red peeks out within a limey, goulish roe
gooseberry jello—
the recipe for love
a labor seeming lost in vain
a meal for one
and though
the sight repels her family there
a gratitude here grows

in husband’s heart for wife’s dear care
through years enjoyed together
a love that’s lasted every weather
two hearts fully repaired.
