If I were a rose

10/28/24

If I were a rose to rest beside you and
the thorns that built us up.
I want to be the one that guides you and
I want our lives to touch.

Young in the summer, younger in the spring
Autumn blooms but love here dooms
the blessed wanted things.

Did my voice ensnare you?
Did I turn too fast?
Petals reach and choke you
that your patience swiftly dashed?

Oh If I were a rose to but look upon you.
Would then you still fear care?

For years I closed my garden,
watched you through the gate.
Over fences then we touched,
and yet your leaves soon turned their face.

What other sun has caught your stare,
Who sees your perfume smell?
Where do you twine another’s hair
and grant her all your spells?

Alas I lonely wilting sit,
our match was but a day.
Your boutonnière sits in decay
My bouquet on display.

this poem is about the disappointment of a short-lived date.
