Under Shields of Beauty

Her shield is a portrait of Helen of Troy
with the power to repel all enemy attacks,
to weaken armies of stout-hearted warriors
and melt their spears and hearts and knees.

Her beauty is a garden that flaunts
its proud geraniums.
The deep reds form the color of her spirit,
and the sun blinds the eyes of the beholder.
Her arms are like tributaries that
reach out and flow into purifying oceans.

Her figure is a sculpture fashioned by the
hands of the Creator that molded her
as the embodiment of the Love Goddess,
the apotheosis of the female form.
Her eyes are ovens that melt the
cold, cold hearts of all onlookers
as they feel her warmth running
through their bones.

But beneath her shields, she is a person,
an ordinary person, apprehensive and errant,
who uses her spell-binding appendages
to perform her everyday duties
and uses her eyes to see them clearly.

Even though she has the power to melt
the cold that swirls around her,
she uses it to sustain her everyday life.
She is an ordinary person
signifying the quintessence of beauty
as fashioned by her creator.
She is a fortunate, ordinary person, she is.
