The Persistence of Memory, by Salvador Dalí
Robert L. Martin

The Private Area

That forbidden island in the mind
That nobody wants to visit,
Where love has never been
And doesn’t want to go,
Where seafarers circle around
To get to distant shores,
Where the angels and the beast
Dance together in perfect unison,
Where evil is the origin of love,
Where smiles are the works of evil,
Where love and hate are
Blended together in a witch’s brew,
Where the potion is indifference,
Where indifference settles in the soul
And becomes that
Forbidden island in the mind,
Where it tries to hide itself
And remain hidden,
Where only God can see it,
Where it sometimes surfaces in a smile,
Where it sometimes loses control,
Where it creates enemies
And causes regret;
It is that private area
Where no one wants to visit.
