Aiding a Comrade, by Frederic Remington
Robert L. Martin

The Hood

Of days gone by
but still clinging on,
still grasping at his sleeve,
still riding on his back,
in his mind, in his attitude,
the camaraderie of the idlers
that glues them together,
spreads throughout the hood
and stays in the blood,
stayed with him
during his escape
into a new world of
prosperity and success.

Camaraderie lingers in his heart
like a mother that lost her child.
Reminiscence brightens the spirit
when it grows dark in
the days of uncertainty.
The dark side of the nature of man
has to surface as it did before.
It is always there no matter
how much of it is covered up.
Camaraderie left its stain in his life.

His prosperous mind is discontent.
Ten million dollars earned is less
than one hundred dollars begotten.
The thrill that keeps the blood boiling
is gone during the transition;
in the not knowing of the outcome.

This poor millionaire is a
slave of the hood mentality.
No matter how hard he tries
to leave it behind, he can’t.

I got inspired to write this when I read about DeAndre Baker of the NY Giants who couldn't get rid of the hood. Even though he's a millionaire, he robbed some people at a party to get back the $70,000.00 he lost previous to that. Why couldn't he get it back from his swollen bank account, the legal way? Talking about being stupid.lol
