Beech Grove I, by Gustav Klimt
Robert L. Martin

The Departure

The certainty of life is its expiration.
The certainty of expiration is its rebirth,
As the earth bows to the sun, the master,
The giver and taker away of
Summer’s temporary life, as the
Sun drifts southward to faraway places,
Leaving the meadows vulnerable to
The chill of autumn that envelopes the land.

Departures are sad occasions, but a
Promise to return lessens that sad feeling.
Patience is the application of faith
That the warmth of springtime will return.
But first we must wait and endure
The pangs of winter-tide, my friend.
But in the meantime, take in
The splendor of the snowcapped mountains.
