Runaway Shadows

Runaway shadows begin to
exit at Martin’s Winding
as the tall, bulging Elm Trees start to undress
in preparation for Winter’s Ball,
running away into the deep abyss.
They strip the road of all its
beauty from the leaves that
cast their animated shadows that
tell a story of the sun’s rendezvous
with the Earth Ball that never stops spinning.

They expose the nakedness of the trees
and tune up for the song of Winter,
“A Symphony of the Winds,”
that howl through the branches
and accompany the chattering crows.
They liven up the song of Winter
with a rhythm and melody
and give a pulse of life to Martin’s Winding
that doesn’t move away with the shadows
but after a while, they climb
out of the abyss
in time for the inundation of Spring.

Hallelujah again!, the time to rejoice,
the time for the Symphony of the Birds,
the time for the earth to rejuvenate,
the time for its heart to start beating again,
and the time to see the shadows
splashing across the road at Martin’s Winding.
