Close & Closer

Looking up at the azure skies
where the mountain top
touches the firmament,
the threshold of
the domain of the blessed,
high city of the scaled stones,
where the crest reaches
into the sacred air that
the almighty breathes
and the rocks respire
in cadence to the roving winds,
climbers climb close and closer
until their breath
becomes his breath,
more so with each step,

until the breathing is a sacred rite,
a passing from the abstract
to the physical,
a revitalized life emerging,
becoming a pure part of the abyss,
a coming to the altar of the soul,
an ingestion of the spirit,
a feeling of it sinking into the lungs
then traveling to the mind,
then telling secrets of the universe,
the alpha and omega,
the books of creation opening up
and walking before the eyes,
as climbers climb close and closer.
