Perhaps even impossible,
To fully appreciate an artist
While they’re still alive
And practicing their craft.
Their capacity for creating works
That can transport us
Into another world,
If only for a brief moment,
Is truly a magical gift.
Such a gift belonged to Andre Braugher.
In the 20th and 21st centuries,
On screens both large and small,
He infused each of his characters
With a deep level of humanity
Which could not be ignored.
Whether in tragedy or comedy,
As Detective Pembleton or Captain Holt,
Andre Braugher could take us away
And now, far sooner than we wanted,
We can fully appreciate his genius.
