place your soul in brine

empty trees

one step in front of the other one
smile and keep the flow,
never let them see you’re struggling
being owned by the under tow,
if you ask for help make sure you need it
because its held against your name,
and just like leaves falling from trees
our hopes and dreams are swept away.

one step in front of the other one
head up and keep in line,
never let them see you’re weakening
or they’ll place your soul in brine,
if you need direction don’t ask for it
because they’ll lead your heart astray,
and just like leaves falling from trees
our hopes and dreams are kept at bay.

one step in front of the other one
until the rasp of your final breath,
and what truth will you have earned
but the truth that love is debt,
you’ll live a life of chaste and goodness
and still get buried in the ground,
and just as leaves falling from the trees
you’re soon forgotten when not around.

(2014)

a poem about love, life, hope and death. How you never get an even break, and if you moan you're chastised or at the very least admonished.
