apron strings

for all fathers who just want a quiet life

You know nothing of the world beyond your mothers apron strings
Yet temerity is your passion as you dance about me in rings
You judge me by a philosophy gained by music television
I don’t demand respect or need it but I’ve earned it through attrition

You treat me as a fool, my feelings discarded as if your dirty clothes
Smeared all over, everywhere, which I pick up without reproach
You ask and you receive without a thank you or a please
And think its amusing I have to work so hard to stay here on my knees

You open the cupboards and there’s food, your washings folded and smelling clean
You rant and rave like a drunken reveller, find beauty in all obscene
You drive my last nerve wayward, every ounce of calm leaves home
You bleed me of my sanity and cripple all the love I know

You always think I’m wrong and never say when I’m correct
Try to put me down in front of friends, at angers cave you prospect
You chip away at egos like an assassin with lethal precision
You craft your words like poison and then flush them in my ear

You hold court like a princess, all you purvey and survey is yours
You shred bare all the things I enjoy to pointless tasks and bores
You think the world and all that’s on it revolves around just you
This may come as a shock but I’m your dad and I think so to
