from out of the lake

through your bedroom window
on the grounds outside your dorm
was a tiny lake in a circle of trees
that caught moonlight and eerie fog
hours spent high as floating kites
hallucinations like braille festering
an army of ancient warriors appeared
calmly marching out of the water

a cross with a banner first poked out
Followed by ripples of silent soldiers
Shields and sword and tattered clothes
to fleece whatever, these marauders
then the gentle hum of quiet song
like a battle cry that fell just too far
in a blink they were gone and I slid back
to a deadening flop on the chair

sometimes I still walk by where you were
the lake is still there and it greets my eye
daylight make it appear unimposing
though I don’t wish to fall for that lie
I recall that odd night with a clarity rare
it ironed an image into my brain
the soft glow of moonlight and an eerie fog
held to ransom my rational of the sane
