Progress

For my generation.

From rushing waters we have come,
Kicking and screaming our various ways
Into the existence of our forefathers,
Cold and cruel, unjust and unfair.
They who came before us and saw
The great chain, and knew their place
And despised it.
They who pushed others away
To take their place, to take control
Of their lives step by step,
Link by link.
We have no such power,
We have no such purpose.
It was taken from us.
Now slowly we sulk back to the sea,
Indifferent waves being our only solace
For generations of poorly constructed progress
Giving us hope, and taking it away.
From rushing waters we have come,
But even that ocean
Has become stagnant and still.
