this leg
a genetic mutation
bent askew
a latitude of pain.
take
a paring knife
start at the ankle
saw horizontal
until the mistake
separates and
halves.
in the
kitchen I look at the knives
blind in a dark drawer
silver black handled
and then
slam the drawer hard
go back to the chair
and sit near
the window.
there in the oleander
pushed up against the screen
perched
on a branch
a radiant blue bunting
the most glorious
of birds.
he
tells me
wordless
there is
harmony still
in this
broken world.
