Fourth in the Fire

Fourth in the Fire

When I was with you
I stayed up all night.
Now we have parted,
I cannot sleep.
And praise god for those differences

Amen for all those times
Where the trees are all surrounded by the early blues
seemed a little taller.
The squirrels, muscovies, and lizards all had names.
All that distance of the world
Simultaneously, it closed in and blew out.

Until all that was in focus
Was not the senses that drew infinite pictures.
Nor the words that made Lazarus get out of his shallow tomb.
Or the smaller deaths we dug up from any dark hollowed place.

No, the earth, heaven, and skies
Demolished anything to further our souls.

It was the breath of the body that blew to the fire
And from that blaze, the embers grew
Reaching into cynical bones, it fanned, burned,
but there you were, I was faithful.

A brazen bull I threw myself into.
And amen for that.
