Ink Blotter

The Prize

You look at me
Like I’m some prize on display
Pride glimmering in your eyes
As you smile encouragingly

AND
I don’t know why
you all believe in me so much

I’m a failure
Struggling to find my way
Running into dead ends
Scraped and bruised from all my falls
Living in filth of my mistakes

BUT
You look at me
like I’m different
Like I’m some prize on display
Pride glimmering in your eyes
As you smile encouragingly

Always there to pick me up
When I’m blinded by the dark
Patching up the holes
Cleaning up my scratches
Until I can walk again

AS
If I’m the best gift
The brightest star
The coziest sweater
The warmest smile

And I wish you knew
I’m not the prize
You are.
