Ink Blotter

Night Crawler

My ceiling is dreary
The white paint
Paled from the years
Flaking and peeling
I stare morbidly content
Enjoying this brief escape
From the loudness in my head
My eyes taking in every detail
The textured finish
The rivers of cracks
Weaved throughout
My mind eager to forget
Trying desperately
To will ‘it’ away
I wait for my next visitor
Starring holes through my ceiling
Imagining the stars beyond
No longer seeing the white dowdy concealer
As my thoughts drift back to you
Despite all my efforts
To avoid just this fate
Praying your visit won’t come tonight

I stare at the ceiling
The paint glaring back
Demanding that I listen
Denying my request for rest
As the madness in my head
Tracks me down again
And the darkness takes me
As I fall into sleep
Momentarily forgetting
The demons that will wake me
