Written & Rewritten

“Don't be afraid to rewrite your story; you hold the pen,"
Carlos Wallace

A Treatise on Writing

I text myself a line, a fleeting thought,
Then write, delete, and write the line anew
Each word is weighed, each syllable is caught,
Until the rhythm settles into view

The rhyme must match, the meter must align,
So back I go to shape the start once more
Two lines in sync—then comes the uphill climb
Of crafting line three, harder than before

Again I tweak the words that came ahead,
Adjust their pace, their sound, their weight, their tone
I chase perfection, though my eyes are red,
And line by line, I build a voice my own

The heart speaks truths no language dares contain,
So metaphors must borrow what they can
I mold the mist, then try and try again—
A shadow’s echo cupped inside my hand.

I write, erase, revise with just a tap—
No ink to spill, no parchment to replace
The poets past had no such safety net,
Each change they made, a mark they must retrace

The final line—a summit still unmet—
Demands I stretch beyond what I had planned
It fights me, mocks me, leaves me drained with sweat,
Yet falls in place like stone beneath my hand

The work is slow, repetitious, and long,
But when it’s done, the quiet joys remain
A crafted verse, both intricate and strong,
Hard-earned and shaped through effort, love, and strain!
