Cold winter morning, hard freeze overnight
Wind chill bone numbing, in the lower teens
Hood drawn and bundled up in thickest jeans
He walked on new fallen snow, pearly white
The early sun had cleared the tallest trees
And warmed his cheeks, red from the winter chill
Warmer he felt as he trudged up the hill
Refreshed, renewed, and moving with more ease
He reached the hilltop, standing all alone
And basked within the silent, frozen scene
The sky was clear above, the trees pristine
In solitude, a peace he’s never known
The sun rose quickly, with a subdued radiance
Hung low within the sky, in winter’s guise
Its warmth was faint, scarce melting all the ice
Across the fields, the shadows swirled in dance
The world is hushed, wrapped in quiet embrace
Whispers of wind break the serene stillness
Hymn to nature’s grandeur in its fulness
Granted to us in everlasting grace
Alas! By midday other people came
Boisterous children with snowboards and skis
His solitude gone and his inner peace
A wonderful time he had all the same
The morning wanes, the sky a softening blue
He takes one last look at the tranquil scene
His heart still full with peace, calm and serene
And walks away, with joy that still rings true
