The Calm Sea

“Work is hard. Distractions are plentiful. And time is short.”
Adam Hochschild

A few frothy wavelets in the calm sea
Bouncing up and down its turquoise surface
An undulating metallic mirror
Shimmering in the late afternoon haze!

But from miles away raven clouds draw nigh
Strong breeze rises to chase away sunlight
In land and sea, whirlwinds rage suddenly
And soon tall pow’rful waves usher the night

Yes, things change with little or no warning
We have to be vigilant and prepared,
For the mercurial capricious weather
Ever ready, equipped and never scared!

Like the weather, life’s unpredictable,
Today may be serene, peaceful and smooth
Yet singular events can break a link
That may unravel an unpleasant truth!

Disappointments can come any time
E’en after moments of exultation
Feelings of deep unspeakable regret
Can overcome bliss and jubilation!

Truly, we have to stay alert for both
The airy lofty heights of happiness
The profound depths of sorrow and despair
For surely, we may fall to an abyss

Therefore, we should focus on the endgame
Not be distracted by the ebb and flow,
The highs and the lows of our everyday,
Remain steadfast to what we truly know...

Divine mission that we’re here to achieve
Salvation and life for eternity
Joy, sorrow, all else are incremental
Eternal truth we know with clarity!

“Be aware when distractions come your way. You’ll know it’s a distraction when you stop doing what you’re supposed to be doing and find yourself pondering things that have no value.” Beverly R. Imes

Personal salvation is still our only job in this life, the be-all and end-all
