Letters

“Among my stillness was a pounding heart.”
Shannon A. Thompson

First letter he ever wrote
In his life of fifteen years
Never felt this way before
First time for things it appears;
Feelings he put on paper
That he hasn’t told his peers
Are deeply felt emotions
Whispered in nobody’s ears;
Started the day he saw her
Underneath the playground spheres
She smiled at him radiantly
From then on, his heart was hers

His friend took the scented note
And passed it on to her friend
Thus intricate bridge was formed
For her to read what he penned
Verses he wrote every night
Each day, a letter he’d send
Praying she’d like what he said
But fearful he may offend

Excitedly each morning
She waited for his letter
With words so sweet, so thrilling
Verses soft as a whisper!
Hoping she sees him in school
She daydreams they’re together;
That she smiled at him that day
Kismet, fortune none other

Born at last a love affair
Cupid’s arrow in the air!

Young people will never know how it was in my generation. No cell phones, no internet, no social media. We see a girl in school and we write her a love letter, hoping she will read it. And the mail delivery system can be very creative and ingenious. It was a different era, more fun I think, and I miss it.
