Infinity Pool

"I know I am but summer to your heart, and not the full four seasons of the year."
Edna St. Vincent Millay

This is where first he kissed her
Many summers ago when kids they were just
Deep in love they were; a future they dreamt of
But with no clue that– work at it, they must!

In the infinity pool; white spray, freezing water
Thundering over large rocks; a downward thrust!
They hugged for warmth, rollercoaster of emotions
Trepidation, ecstasy but no doubt also lust!

But there’s naked panic in their hearts,
Fear in their eyes, for much too young they both were
Nothing they knew about life and relationships
No experiences to draw on, world’s still a blur!

What do they do? Shall they tell all their friends?
She said she loves him; he was sure he loves her
So under the big boulders, they held hands tight
Freezing! But praying what they had will endure!

Sadly, it didn’t last long, summer’s end not even
They went home that day and went their merry way
There were three-hour phone calls the first week
Soon they’re shorter, they’re out of things to say

A few times they met, held hands and kissed
But life went on; soon their hearts gone astray!
Truly, the best thing that happened
Neither of them ready to commit, love faded away!

Though young they were, their love bloomed fast and bright
A fleeting summer’s flame, too soon grown old
The years have passed, but memories still remain
Of the love that slipped away, its warmth gone cold

So today, he reminisces in this lovely place
She was his first love; sadly, she’s not anymore
He’s ready to commit now but she is gone
She was his first love; will be forevermore!
