Drift and Dream

"We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch, we are going back from whence we came."
~John F. Kennedy

The ocean lies, serene and still
Its glassy surface, shades of chill
A sudden dive—a seagull’s flight
Sends ripples dancing in the light

A lovely morn from ship’s balcony
Welcoming sun rise from the sea
Its golden rays warm every face
As fading night leaves not a trace

The waves, their soporific sound
Soft crashing on the ship around
A lullaby for weary ears
To dreams we’ll drift as calm appears

But morning’s light, so inviting
The scenic view awe-inspiring
It nourishes our tired spirits
A boundless cure that life inherits

By the shore, we’ll bask in sunshine
And savor slow a glass of wine
We’ll gaze toward the horizon
Where sky and ocean blend as one

Alas! The day will soon be done
Its sunset glow will mark its run
The ship will sail at twilight’s call
To a far and distant atoll

But with the dawn, as daybreak nears
We’ll wake where new land first appears
And hope another paradise
Awaits to greet our eager eyes
