Door to Forever

In younger days, he feared not death itself
But all the pain that comes before the end
Would anguish steal his breath and waste his health
Or would it strike too swiftly to defend?
Through years, he watched as suffering took its hold
When age and illness claimed their weary prize
He saw the strong grow frail; their hands turn cold
Yet silence veiled the sorrow in their eyes
And so, he pondered why they lingered on
When joy had fled, when touch and taste were vain
No golden dawn, no gleam of silvered moon
No songs of love could free them from their pain
What worth is life when all its grace has died
When limbs grow weak and senses fade away?
While beyond this, beyond the great divide
A realm awaits where night dissolves to day!
And there, no sorrow dwells! nor burden weighs
No aching bones, no tears of sad regret
No fear remains, no dark affliction stays
But peace abides, where pain shall not be met
And so, he sleeps, surrendered to the night
Yet sleeps to wake, for death is but a door
The voice of God shall call him into light
To dwell with Him in bliss forevermore
To live is toil; to die is not so hard
For death is but the bridge to brighter years
The latter rain will cleanse where life is scarred
And bring an end to sorrow, pain, and tears!

I wrote this poem ten years ago. I wasn’t happy with it so I stored it in my “trash” bin for revisiting down the road. I looked at it recently and reworked some of the phrases and verses I didn’t like at that time. I’m satisfied with it now and so I have posted it. But the question I still ask, why hold on to life when life doesn’t bring you happiness and satisfaction? Why hold on to it when all life gives you is pain and suffering?
