A Joyless Marriage

Proverbs 5:18-19(KJV)
“Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.”

The sun shines on a breezy cloudless autumn day
The brown leaves barely clinging to the bough
Winter’s at the doorstep, the cold not faraway
Spring’s long gone but where did the summer go?
She sat motionless on a bench in the driveway
While she sorted piles of photos and documents
She glimpsed at some pictures from another day
Tears welled when she recalled happier moments

She thought of her wedding day many years ago
Beaming with happiness in her lily-white dress
She looked adoringly at him when she said I do
Spring smiled, providence opened its largesse
Deep in love she lost herself in the marriage
She ceased to be a person, became subservient
To her husband’s wishes, she lost her courage
In no time she became skillful at appeasement

Sadly domestic bliss was not to be her destiny
For he has a wandering eye, a deceitful heart
She persevered in silence despite his calumny
She prayed he’d change so sadness will depart
However, the state of affairs did not improve
Despite the birth of a son and then a daughter
There were dalliances she knew yet can’t prove
But she stayed, her wedding vows she’d honor

So she focused everything on her little children
And she showered them with love and affection
Raised them to love God, care for their brethren
To walk in the straight path to attain salvation
Those happy summer days watching the kids grow
Remembering precious moments fattens her heart
But the bedroom was barren, cold as an ice floe
Sadly she and her husband were irrevocably apart

And time flew, the children went through school
They left for college and now they’re on their own
The house is deserted and the future seems so cruel
She felt abandoned, miserable and terribly alone
She thought she was in the abyss, she’s mistaken
For in life’s autumnal hours her husband left her
For a younger woman; her faith in God was shaken
Woe is me! Woe is me! But could anyone blame her?

That was just a year ago and the house is now empty
Except for the stack of photographs and documents
Mementoes from days of drought and days of plenty
Testimonials to a marriage with few happy moments
Around her the ground’s covered with autumn leaves
Yet she is now at peace with herself and her Maker
At long last, she forgave him and she no longer grieves
For the Comforter has come to prepare her for winter

Definitely, one of the saddest poems I have written. It is tragic because it is based on a true story - the real story of someone I know. But even more tragic, because the story is not unique, and it belongs to so many women out there.
