Sara Beth

Allowance

Always keep me.
Tattoo my name on your skin
out of sight, out of mind.
Plant a seed and start the life of a tree.
Let me water it with affirmations,
let me shine on it with hugs and love.
Allow it to grow and allow it to open.
Breathe when the leaves fall
at the same time as your tears.
Rake them up, allow disintegration
let them be ground into green grass.
Let them be walked on by small raccoons,
tails streaked with colors of peace and acceptance
and ears down for carefree days
with white snowflakes gently caressing their soft fur.
Let branches break off and let them grow back.
Throw small twigs for dogs to chase
and be glad when they’re gone for good.
Carve my name into the trunk, near the roots
that way if the tree dies, I will remain
with my strong hold on the ground
and dreams of our tree tickling the sky,
giving everything to get it there
for always and forever.
