Music sketch, by Henri Matisse
Robert L. Martin

What Love Does:

It looks for you among a large crowd.
It looks for someone else there also.
It places both of you in each other’s sight.
It is that affinitive moment that introduces
The intoxication of life to the both of you.
It is the spark that ignites the flame
That illumes the inner domain of the heart.
It forces you to move toward each other.
It renders you helpless to the power of love.
It opens up the heart of life and
Reveals the mystery of procreation.
It moves you up to the glory of love
As it prepares you for love’s crowning,
And makes you worthy to
Follow the course of love.

What Love Does Also:

It disguises itself as divine love.
It looks for you among a large crowd.
It looks for someone else there also.
It places both of you in each other’s sight.
It alters your bodily chemistry
But not hers.
It forces you to move toward her.
It tells you that she loves you also.
It waits for you to fall in love.
It places you under “her” authority,
But not love’s authority.
It mocks you as you degrade yourself.
It tears your heart out and throws it away.
It shows you what a fool you are.

Love is the divine course that lovers follow,
But love is also the trap that fools fall into.
