The Eendracht and a Fleet of Dutch Men-of-war , by Ludolf Bakhuizen
Robert L. Martin

The Separation

When rulers rule from beyond the sea,
Beyond the waves and forest tree,
Over the shores of freedom’s land,
Over the oppressed of those who ran,

Dreams of independence come at night,
And at the dawn for still in sight,
Freedom must come with a price to pay,
Gearing up for war to crank up the day.

If by war, then we must break the binding
With guns and canons and arduous grinding.
The separation came with victory in the mix,
Documented on this day in 1776.
The Declaration of Independence,
Free at last from this day hence.

I wrote this for the magazine "The Belt and Beyond" for Independence Day.
