Annunciation, by Gerard David
Robert L. Martin

Obedience

Poet scribes in obedience to the
language of the spirits are the true poets
sanctioned by the divine spirit inside the muses
that hover above and into the hearts of them.
They give them the words to write down,
and if poetry comes from any other source,
it is a sacrilege of the spirit that speaks to them
by the words that come from a false messiah
who gives them all his words in defiance.

Poetry is a sacred incarnation of the joy
from the wine that is poured into the soul
of the poet scribes by the spirits that become
rivers that touch the banks of inspiration
that relays the language of the spirits that
cleanses the hearts and sows new words in them
and enriches the heart and thoughts with rhyme.

They start to flourish and
strengthen the convictions within that
ward off any sacrilege that curses the
validity of the sacred ambience that forms inside
as the spirit takes up residence in the soul
and becomes a citadel that fends off all invaders.

All the poetry that comes out of the mouths
of the poet pretenders who speak
not from the spirit
but in disobedience to the creed of poetry,
are fools who speak to fools.
They cater to the rich
with their words of flattery
so they can buy their mansions and yachts.

God bless the real poets.
God bless their introspections.
God bless their ability to discern.
God bless their allegiance.
God bless their convictions.
God bless their obedience.
God bless them all.
