Twilight in the Wilderness, by Frederic Edwin Church
Robert L. Martin

Horizontal Rains

From the mouth of the darkened sky
That snarls and blows the rains awry

Air machines in maddened churning
From unholy pits of inferno’s burning

Curse the stillness of the contented rains
Blowing them sideways across the plains

To yonder parts in yonder lands
Raping villages and ocean strands

Mother Nature is a sweet old lady
Mostly smiling but somewhat shady

Sometimes an advocate of the devil’s rage
Runs like a beast from an iron cage

Across the waters tossing ships around
A child at play on a deep-sea playground

Blowing horizontal rains across the sea
Breaking loose and running free
