Free Will

Free Will

Free will is a canticle of freedom, but it is not freedom.  It is not the fruit of our desires, but it is the voice of the spirit that whispers to us the merits and limitations of freedom.

It belongs to the spirit of the righteous, but also kindles the spirit of the unrighteous.  Like a flood driven river cutting new trails in the ground, it is non-discriminate and wanders through the portals of the soul and bewilders the mind.

It is a fragile gift that urges good and evil to run its course.  It is not punishment dealt to us for abusing it, but imbued with wisdom to show us that the pain from it would be self-inflicted.

If it were given with bad intentions, wouldn’t it be used with bad intentions?  Since God is forever good, wouldn’t his gift to us be given with good intentions and a good motive?

We are messengers of the spirit of giving, and free will is entrusted by God for us to carry out its mission.  It is a complement for our discernment and our ability to discern.

Free will is the ultimate gift of giving.  It is not possessions to feed the desire of possessiveness, but wings to carry us to the threshold of our own freedom that possesses nothing, for the air that gives us life cannot be measured by gold and silver.

When the value of our possessions surpasses the value of freedom, it clouds our minds with the true meaning of freedom, and changes the value of it.

An accumulation of wealth is scattered to the wind when the earth has claimed our lifeless bodies; for we will stand naked in the face of the sun when the veil of death darkens our days, and our souls shall rise and sing praises to our greater freedom.

All in all, the voice of free will is entrusted to us.  It gives us the authority to choose our own path to follow.  The safety and sanctity of goodness has spread it out for us.

From my book entitled, "In Reverence to Life."
