Fighters of the Past and the Now

Fighters of the days of now and yore,
who laid down their lives for evermore,
are gone from us ne’er to come again.
They fought like hell until the very end,
until the white wings of death took them away;
indeed a dangerous ordeal and a price to pay,
but it was an honorable death amid the turmoil.
They were brave, they were tough and oh so loyal.

We come to honor those fighters on this very day
that fought for our freedom in a gallant way.
They came to our rescue when the time was right,
as the enemy was approaching within their sight.

With spears, galloping steeds and cannons affixed,
then guns and airplanes and missiles in the mix;
through the ages they fought again and again
as the enemy approached around the bend.

Thank God for creating them who answered the bell
and the fighting men and women who rose and fell.
They shall always remain in our memory.
This is the life of our heroes, a soldier’s story.
God bless America
and God bless them all.

I wrote this for the Belt and Beyond and for the Memorial Day ceremony at the cemetery
