Around the Christmas Table

Around the Christmas Table

The rich man said; “For Christmas I got a new car.  The drunkard said; “I spent all the money I got on drink.”  The wise man said; “My friends gathered at my house to exchange presents and discuss the merits of giving.  We found that giving is not a sacrifice.  It is in the fulfillment of the will of the Holy Spirit; to abide by its sovereignty in order to feel that joy of giving, as submission to it then becomes a freedom.  Sacrifice leaves a void in the soul that still longs for something to fill it again, suppressing that freedom of satisfaction that it needs.  It is within that freedom that the joy of giving is merited.”
Perishable gifts that satisfy an urge are like the seasons that can’t last forever.  Giving as the Holy Spirit demand is like all these seasons combined into one to prolong the joy of freedom from within.
