R. Lincoln Harris

Thanks, Bob

Thanks, Bob, for making us laugh
In your calm and cerebral fashion.
Other performers would shout and curse
But you had a different way to cash in.

Comedy albums are a thing of the past
And I’ll admit that I never owned yours.
But Pryor and Dangerfield and all of the rest
Walked right through your opened doors.

Your television shows were always worth watching;
Another way that you blazed a trail.
Could a show like “Seinfeld” ever exist
Had we seen “The Bob Newhart Show” fail?

And what would the movie “Elf” had been
Without your dry and sardonic presence?
Like so many other roles that you played
You were the king. Other comedians? Peasants!

No one could use a phone as you did
For uproarious comedic effect.
Although landlines now are largely passe’
It sparked laughter we’ll never forget.

After 94 years, the time has arrived
You’ve boarded the eternal train ride.
Thanks so much for making us laugh
Your humor will always abide.
