Burden

—The burden fell on me
—That windy day in September
—but I had been lifting and running
—preparing my soul for such a burden
—but no amount of reps could prepare my muscles
—and 3,000 times around the old worn track would not prepare me
—because that day when the burden fell on me
—it was too much
—I was crushed
—bones snapping
—heavy tears falling
—I was crushed by worry of other people
—pressure to do well
—but what fell the heaviest were the tears
—the tears that slowly rolled down my mothers cheeks
—her round cheeks that turned red when I made her laugh
—but the burden crushed me
—it hit me so quickly
—hit me so quick I didn’t have time to think of her
—hit me like a bullet
—just like the one the doctors would find
—the one that I put threw my head
—and heavy tears rolled down my mothers cheeks
—because a heavy burden fell on me
