Held fast in the gaze of a demons smile
Heavy lids to cover the darkest beams
Heavy arms to shelter and nurture till coddled
Though the gap stays as cold and unseen
Through the years the headlights stare
Persistent, infused and imbued
A car crash of wills, a dictionary of grunts
Too tame to make lame, we bite and chew
No hand to hold and no kiss goodnight
When darkness creeps we envisage its face
Its illuminated kamikaze eyes
With much aplomb it delves our souls
It knows the fears and weaknesses
We are its heart that beats and turns
We are every wrinkle etched on its frame
Its that part of us which we just can’t let go
It lays us down to sleep at night
And torments the good and bad the same
Take the mirrors down, they hurt my eyes
Let me be reborn again
For I have seen bleak misery
For I have seen decay
For I have heard the dirge of hunger
And yet still live today
For I have been long selfish
For I have been long cruel
Take the mirrors down, I know my face
Its worn by all of you
