a tone deaf finger

With a snoring dog upon my lap
I sit and reminisce of things gone past
Of how my life has swapped and changed
And how my love has peaked and waned
Of how my youth has died and lived
And how my brain has learned no gift
Of how the smell of summer entices
And how small things lead to larger choices

Of how the shallow treat the kind
And how tv controls young minds
Of how money causes all the worlds ills
And how placebo doctors dole out cure all pills
And as a tone deaf finger pokes and prods
As we wince and moan and ache and nod
As we hold loved ones the length of an arm
We learn the true nature of not being calm

And as cracks open up and the bile spues
Down the shirts of purity and snobbery, too
Our shaky hands just can’t thread the needle
We need to pull this fabric together
We’re adrift in a boat with a hole and no oar
We’re taking in water and have places to go
Though, we’re stuck treading water, gallantly
A watery grave awaits the proud

My dog still snores, not a care in the world
Dreaming of nothing but good honest times
While here I languish, steeped in a dour regret
A tone deaf finger, pointing, cursing, anointing
