O.C. Bearheart

Awake at Midnight

For Charlotte

Sometimes when I’m sleeping
I dream that you are older
When your blue eyes have grown bitter
And your young heart has grown colder.
And I’ll wake up from that nightmare
To find you fast asleep
And I’ll tuck you in and kiss you
On your warm and rosy cheek.
I remember how you looked at me
On that first day we met.
Since then I’ve faced some grief,
But I’ve had nothing to regret.
And as I watch you sleeping
I’ll wonder what will pass
Through years of tribulations
That will come and go so fast.
I tell you that I love you
In the hopes that all my words
Will nestle in your mind
And make your hopes and dreams insured.
I sing to you so softly
So that you can barely hear.
Before I fall asleep again
I wipe away a tear
And tell you that I’m sorry
For what may come to pass
And what already has.
