American Bloom

To my generation

We are the current youth,
We are wild and free.
We eschew our pasts,
We sprint toward futures.
We love ourselves,
And we neglect one another.
All of us running in different directions,
All of us running,
Spirited and reckless, energetic,
And entirely miserable.
Our egocentrism
Gives us inaccurate ideas
Of false judgment and need.
But at least we are free,
Chasing our dreams.

We are the current youth,
We are wild and free,
The fire in our hearts waxes and wanes:
We are but tiny, fickle flames
After all,
Goal oriented and determined,
Focused and direct,
Avoidant and frightened,
Extinguished by the smallest breath,
The most indirect drizzle,
The hazards of our own mortality.
But at least we are free,
Chasing our dreams.

We are the current youth,
We are wild and free;
We are aimless and uncontrolled,
Disorganized, inefficient,
Bleary eyed and tormented.
We run from everything,
But especially from ourselves.
We are unabashed and without regret,
Hateful and unapologetic.
We view our peers as meat,
Competition in the race toward aimless goals
And lofty dreams,
And we lash out without thinking,
And run from the victims
That lie cold behind us.
But at least we are free,
Chasing our dreams.
