Illegal Birthing

Evelyn Jey

Everything burst open.
Ripping,
Tearing,
Junetime and Maytime
When the moths exploded
Fast out of their shells
Hatching,
Hatching,
Hatching.

Green oozed out
Bright and bountiful
Look, look here!
We are no longer dry and drab.
We look like FLORIDA.
What an upgrade!!

It was ninety-eight degrees in the
Arctic circle last week.
It rains here even though
It’s not supposed to.
I hear it on my dusty window screen
And wish for summer,
Wish for being small,
For smelling metal and getting
Wet splinters in
Bare feet,
Glistening from grass,
Octobering from flowers.

Everything burst open,
Dandelions and their butter, bananas,
Lemons. Although not many things are yellow
When you think about it. There were
Blossoms on the trees
And the crab grass grew until
My father decided enough was enough, and to cut it.
I was sad–
I had never seen grass grow that tall.
It is not supposed to.
We are in Colorado, after all.
