Red Setter
dog that's out of fashion
Fringed copper coat,
A rustic sheen ; glossy, silky, and fine,
a truly handsome dog,
But this is not your time.
People want small continental types,
Or big dogs that threaten,
or medium mixes that do not moult,
There is no space for the gentle mouthed Setter,
Who takes up the whole back seat,
And takes an hour to dry.
Yet on this bright Autumn day,
When the scenery is on fire
With shades of bronze and flaming orange,
How sure I am of his place,
Amongst Birch and Chestnut,
As he retrieves the toy duck
