Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer

Rhyme LVI. Today like yesterday, tomorrow like today...

Today like yesterday, tomorrow like today
and always the same!
A gray sky, an eternal horizon
and walking..., walking.

The heart moves in rhythm
like a stupid machine;
the sluggish intelligence of the brain
dozes in a corner.

The soul, that aspires to paradise,
searches without faith;
grows weary for no purpose, a wave that rolls
without knowing why.

Voice that incessantly with the same tone
sings the same song;
monotonous drop of water that falls,
and falls ceaselessly.

Thus the days slide by
one after the other,
today just like yesterday..., and all of them
without joy or sorrow.

Ay! At times I sigh wistfully
for the suffering of the past...
Sorrow is bitter; but at least
to suffer is to live!

(1868)

Refleja gran tristeza, hastío y un mirar hacia atrás donde solo sobreviven los recuerdos, poniendo de manifiesto la monotonía y gran rutina que compone la vida.
