That Old Time Religion II

Gimme That Ole-Time Religion

Needy ancients were aggrieved
If prayers’s goals were not achieved,
And beat the god in stone or tree
For what they thought its treachery.

Despite assertions of his presence,
Our God today’s a fuzzy essence,
And if our wish He can’t fulfill,
We sigh and say it was His will,
Not caning him as drone or poser.

That’s nice of us but weak on closure –
Perhaps we should be bellicoser.
