Edwin Morgan

Birth

Someone is born again.
In the singing tower the rain
Sweetened the song
And all night long
I heard a sad and muffled prayer,
A foot upon the stair
Of someone bringing hours
A scent of passing flowers,
Delicate and white
Upward through the night.
I heard the wind against the harbor shore,
The closing of a door.
