Ink Blotter

The Broken Smile Club

You hide behind your big smile
But I know you wear a mask
And I see the lies you hide
I see the scarred fragile soul
Cracking beneath the weight.

You’re broken.
But you refuse to be seen as weak.
So you smile.
Hiding your shame
Hiding the pain
Not wanting the world to see
How deeply your bruises go
How mangled your heart has become.

And the tears never dry
As you confide only in shadows
The nightmares of your past still holding you tight

And
You smile
You hide
But I see
I see your sadness
Lurking in those eyes
Because its just like mine

Another shattered soul
Haunted by the past
The memories inspiring our nightmares

As you struggle to keep afloat
Even as your drowning
Even though you wish you could sink
Because you aren’t weak
And you refuse to let them see
The damage that they have done
All those who did you wrong.

So you smile
With shinning eyes
A master at disguise
You hide your secrets in plain sight
And you save your tears for the night
When the darkness looms
And there is nowhere left to hide
Because you blame yourself
Choking on your guilt
Thinking it’s somehow retribution
For being damaged goods
For being flawed

But your thinking is skewed
The dirt clinging to your skin
An illusion
The darkness all in your head
Because it isn’t your fault
Your not to blame for any of it
You were just a victim
Of the ugly this world holds.

And
You’ve been hurt
And
You’re broken
So you lie to yourself
Trying the patch the holes
Inside your soul.

Ignoring the pain
You smile
Carrying the weight of the world
Behind the mask
Because you don’t want the world to know
How ugly this place can be.

And you smile
The most beautiful woman
I’ve ever known

Her strength radiating
Like the sun

I wish you wouldn’t lie
I wish you didn’t feel the need to hide

But..
You’ve been hurt
And
You’re broken
Looking through a kaleidoscope
And you don’t see yourself in truths
Strong, Beautiful, and Brave.
