FOR SALLIE (1876-1925)

Sallie, you never held her
In the warmth of your arms.
Sallie, you never smiled
And cooed at her.

Sallie, she never gazed into
Your brilliant blue eyes;
Nor, did she ever wear a little
Dress that you sewed for her.

Sallie, there was no time left
To rock her under the shade
Of the old Paw Paw tree.

You left them when you were very young;
And for you, her heart has always longed.

Still, she feels she’d known you, Sallie...
Listen, Grandmother,
Do you hear her song?
